Even though I have lived here for 27 years, I still try and make the Springtime rounds of concentrated Cherry Blossom sites. Of course the DC Tidal Basin is the most famous and most popular of all. On March 27, 1912 Mayor Yukizo Ozaki of Tokyo gifted the trees to the city of Washington, D.C. Mayor Ozaki donated the cherry trees in recognition of the growing relationship and friendship between the United States and Japan. In a ceremony on First Lady Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two of these DC cherry trees on the north bank of the Tidal Basin. All of the trees along the tidal basin are carefully trimmed and tended and quite of few of the original trees are still alive. Many of the new trees have been grown from cuttings from the originals. The tidal basin infrastructure needs some work to keep the trees in good shape. In high tide the walkway around the basin floods and the brackish water from the basin is soaked up by the trees. This has not been good for the trees and hopefully some plans will be made to make the necessary repairs. This is a banner year for the cherry blossoms. On a good year like this, the trees as a group take on a fluffy cloud like appearance. Some years I ride my bike down to the basin from Arlington and take photos at sunrise. This year it was a bit chilly (until today) for that so I took the metro and walked over. The closest metro stop is the Smithsonian stop on the Orange line and it’s a 10-15 minute walk over to the Tidal Basin. In spite of the clouds and 40-50 degree temperatures there were lots of folk from all over the country and many from outside the country enjoying the annual site and festivities. A few doggies too.
